"All American Dog"
President Hoover

The Chinook breed is named after the famous lead sled dog of Antarctic explorer Arthur Walden of New Hampshire.  Admiral Byrd had asked him to train a sled pulling team of dogs for work in his Antarctic expedition.  These dogs were to become the backbone of his transportation.

Four generations of  Mountain Laurel females.
Julia & Liberty 5, Mystery 3, MacKenzie 10,

HISTORY...
Chinook was the name Arthur Walden gave to his lead dog.  There were other breeds in his team, but Chinook led them all.  He was strong, eager to lead, and made no mistakes.  He was respected by both his animal workers and human masters.  The dogs activities, were reported regularly to the newspapers of the day.  Admiral Byrd was quoted, "That without these dogs his mission could never have been accomplished".  An aging Chinook wandered off alone on the ice during a 1920's polar expedition and his body was never found.  Chinook's obituary appeared on the front page of the New York Times.

The Chinook was declared an "All American Dog" by President Hoover.  They have been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records several times as the rarest breed in the world.  Our breed has come close to extinction but has been brought back through a program of selective breeding.

PHILOSOPHY...
There are varying philosophies in breeding Chinooks. Our philosophy has always been to be faithful to the original Walden dogs.  Many people who see our dogs say they are the benchmark of the breed and they look very much like the originals.  We are trying our best to breed back the strength, stamina and excellent disposition that the original Chinook had.  We strive to bring back the historical look of the Chinook while maintaining its health and temperament.

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS...
We believe that an informed owner is a dog's best friend.  Anyone considering a Chinook should do research of the breed, breeders and health issues.  When breeding we are always trying to improve upon the qualities of both parents.  We work hard to make the best choices.  Mountain Laurel uses statistical breeding to eliminate or decrease problems.  Before breeding we consult with a professional genetic counselor.  Pedigree analysis is used as a tool to assist breeders in realizing the genetic potential of a mating.  All our dogs are sired by an authentic purebred registered Chinook.  Breed coefficients done by computer are used to select from the gene pool.  All breeding dogs receive routine preventative care and regular veterinary checkups.  They are certified free of hip dysplasia.

HEALTH...
Mountain Laurel has participated in all health studies going on within the Chinook breed.  Dr. Jerold Bell DVM from Tufts University of Veterinary Medicine studied and compiled results for the Chinook breed Health and Diversity Studies in 1998.  He felt that healthy dogs are under reported in studies and this tends to overestimate the frequency of disorders.  As in all breeds, no matter how excellent the breeding program is, randomly dogs will be born with health issues.  We work for the health of our companion animals.  By addressing genetic issues with open eyes, Mountain Laurel and other Chinook enthusiasts should be able to enjoy the renaissance of a healthy breed for many years.

We don't have all the answers, but if we are patient our knowledge will increase.  Each generation of our line is important.  The information that has been reported to us regarding the health history of our dog's ancestors is favorable and shows we have been getting excellent results.  We will continue to keep track of our bloodline and successful breeding program.

KNOWLEDGE...
Keep asking questions to as many people as you can from breeders and owners alike.  Get as much information and knowledge you can to make an informed decision.  We think if you do your homework, you can be pretty confident that the pup you get, will be all you hoped for!
